Producing clean energy and taking advantage of the hydraulic potential of a river is the main role of hydroelectric power plants. In order to allow them to operate efficiently and safely, a set of quality and reliable equipment built for long continuous operating periods is required. To guarantee the success of this project’s operation, WEG was selected to supply the hidrogenerators for São Roque Hydroelectric Power Plant, located in the municipality of Vargem, the state of Santa Catarina, in Brazil.
Regarded as one of the most important project components, WEG´s package includes three 50.5 MVA, 13.8 kV and 180 rpm SLW 4000 hydrogenerators and the auxiliary equipment.
Weighing 285 tons each and approximately eight meters in diameter, these machineries are the largest electric hydrogenerators ever produced by WEG.With specialized engineering and verticalized production, WEG designs and produces equipment that fully meets our customer’s needs and requirements.
This supply is part of a large infrastructure project that will provide energy for Brazil´s electric system, boosting the region and the country´s economic sector. Dependent on 142 megawatts of installed capacity, the São Roque Power Plant generates enough energy to supply a city with approximately 170 thousand people.

Water is an indispensable resource for life and although it is a natural source, to reach people it requires efficient infrastructure and equipment. Concerned about this, Ruhrpumpen, one of the main manufacturers of pump systems in the world, chose WEG as equipment supplier to the named Ramal do Agreste project, which will take water to about 70 municipalities in the state of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil.
This water infrastructure is an extension of the São Francisco River Integration project with the Northeastern Hydrographic Basins. The main objective is to capture water from the Barro Branco dam, in the municipality of Sertânia and drain it into the Ipojuca reservoir, in the municipality of Arcoverde, in Brazil.
To drive the centrifugal pumps that will be installed at the pumping station, WEG is supplying three M mine slip ring motors, frame size 900, 8,000 kW, 13,800 V with special features such as the flexibility of their electrical and mechanical design. They are versatile motors that allow different configurations to suit different applications. In addition, the use of slip ring motors presents a low starting current of the motors, close to the nominal, thus minimizing the voltage drop, optimizing the substation and, consequently, reducing investments in the electrical installation.
By choosing the WEG M line motors, Ruhrpumpen invests in project reliability that will benefit around 2.2 million people, in addition to contributing to the development of the region. For WEG, being a key supplier for this project strengthens the company’s image as an important player in the Water segment and includes another supply reference in the market.

WEG will supply the largest backpressure steam turbine and the largest 4-pole generator in the Brazilian sugar-energy industry for Cerradão power plant. This is considered the world´s largest backpressure turbine in the sugar-energy sector.
Including a 60 MW backpressure BT steam turbine, a SuperTurbo gearbox, a 66.7 MVA, 4-pole, 13,800 V, 1800 rpm, 60 Hz ST generator and a complete protection, control and monitoring system with cabinets, panels, battery system and chargers, the contract will generate revenues of approximately R$ 15 million (approx. US$ 3 million) for WEG.
The BT turbine has the capacity to generate over 330 t/h of steam at 65 bar/520 degrees C, and will supply the plant process with two steam outlets, one medium pressure outlet and one low pressure exhaust. Scheduled to be delivered in December 2021, the equipment will be installed in the plant’s energy generation process, allowing the operation to be more robust, flexible and profitable.
As stated by Paulo Sinoti, WEG Energy Business Director, in addition to consolidating WEG as one of the main suppliers of equipment for the sugar-energy industry sector, this supply evidences the customer’s preference and trust in our products and services. “Cerradão power plant is already our customers list and has two turbogenerators in operation in the same plant”, says Paulo.
Cerradão power plant is located in the Frutal region, in the state of Minas Gerais since 2008. A power plant of 84 MW/h and installed capacity of 105 MW provides enough energy for approximately 230,000 people. With this investment, the Power Plant expects a significant increase in energy generation and a return on invested capital of approximately three years.

WEG will be supplying about 40 MV electric motors with rated output up to 13,400 kW, over 100 LV electric motors and five MV variable speed drives (three of them with 11,723 kW rated output) for the largest oil and gas platform in Brazil.
These products, which are already being produced at the WEG manufacturing site located in Jaraguá do Sul/SC, Brazil, will be supplied through compressor and pump manufacturers from Europe and Asia, and will be driving these machineries at Bacalhau oilfield.
Designed for the Santos Basin pre-salt and with the first oil production scheduled between 2023/2024, the new platform will have a production capacity of 220,000 barrels of oil per day and 15 million m³ per day of natural gas.
In the last decade WEG has consolidated itself as the world’s largest supplier of electric motors for oil and gas FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) platforms, mainly due to the high technology used in its products and high operating reliability.
“For projects like this, where final destination is Brazil, our customers can also count on the largest local service structure with highly trained and qualified engineers to provide prompt support in case of any need,” says Elder Stringari, WEG´s International Director.

Weighing 348 tons each, both transformers are manufactured at the factory in Blumenau, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil and will be incorporated into the electrical energy transmission system in the southern region of the African continent.
Benefits of these transformers include robustness, flexibility and reliability provided to the power supply system, contributing directly for the development of the local economy, in addition to being urgently needed to help minimize the current energy shortage in the region and expanding the ongoing emergency investments for the generation of complementary power supply. Regarded as the largest ever produced by WEG, these transformers feature power rating of 500,000kVA and voltage class of 400,000V.
The first unit is scheduled to ship early April of this year and the second in May, ahead of the agreed contractual terms. Transit time from the factory in Brazil to the final destination in Africa is estimated at 60 days.
In addition to holding manufacturing operations for other products in the African continent, WEG is also present locally with two transformer factories, both located near Johannesburg, South Africa, which produce and supply the local market with 145kV voltage class transformers.
“WEG strengthens its position in the local market with the on-time delivery of these 500 MVA transformers, which is necessary to minimize the shortage of power supply in the region. The entire supply which counted on the cooperation of our South African team, reinforces WEG’s commitment to the development of our employees and the interaction of competences, as well as to the development of the country” says Jan-Frederik Viljoen, Director of WEG Transformers Africa.
