There is no doubt that one of the major water problems facing the world today is the provision of drinking water. Water scarcity was listed in 2019 as one of the biggest global risks in terms of potential impact over the next decades.
Through a team of engineering specialists dedicated in the Water Industry, WEG has always been at the forefront of supplying electrical solutions for the Water Industry worldwide. This time WEG products are chosen as part of the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant (KMEDP) project in Singapore. In this specific project, WEG’s motors are installed in it.
The KMEDP is an innovative large-scale desalination facility; and is also the world’s first dual-mode desalination plant. Its innovative capability can treat both freshwater and seawater, depending on weather conditions. The plant will produce 137.000 m3/day of clean water, which is enough to fill 45 olympic-size swimming pools and 7 percent of Singapore’s daily water demand.
For this project, WEG Singapore collaborate with Torishima, a pioneer in pumps for seawater desalination, to supply the high efficiency motors for their Reverse Osmosis (RO) system package.
In desalination systems, from small to large capacities, energy savings is always concern, it’s usual therefore, to consider energy recovery devices (ERD) to achieve best operation conditions and high energy savings. This device combined with the ERD Booster pumps and high-pressure pumps will drive cost savings and emission reductions.
There are two types of pumps used in RO system High Pressure Pump and ERD Booster Pump.
The WEG’s motors scope of supply from Nantong Factory was:
Motors for the use in desalination plants are required to operate in harsh climates 24/7, highly durable, with special painting plant against corrosion from seawater and high efficiency to minimize energy consumption.
WEG is very proud to be part of the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant project, with the supply of special designed products to attend customers’ needs. This project is another WEG step towards Water Industry and Driving Efficiency and Sustainability.

The leader in auditing and consulting services, Ernst & Young (EY) announced the winners of the 23rd edition of the Entrepreneur of the Year Brazil Program, an online event held last Tuesday, April 27, 2021, in partnership with Forbes.
During the award ceremony, representatives of five categories were announced. WEG´s Chairman of the Board, Décio da Silva, was the winner in the Family Enterprise category, representing successful family companies in the market they do business, with emphasis to the management generating positive impact on the business and on the community.
Receiving this nomination makes all of the members of the Silva, Werninghaus and Voigt families very honored and proud. We want to dedicate this award to the three founders of the Company, Mr. Eggon, Mr. Werner and Mr. Geraldo. Valuing people has always been a point that deserved the founders’ special attention on the great legacy they left us: “If machines are missing, you can buy them; if there is no money, you can borrow; but people you can’t buy or borrow, and people motivated by an idea are the basis for success”. That´s why, we want to share this recognition with all the employees of WPA, Oxford Porcelains and WEG SA, who contributed to building this company to be solid and competitive”, said Decio da Silva, WEG´s Chairman of the Board.
The Entrepreneur of the Year (EOY) program celebrates 35 years at EY global and has been held for 23 years in Brazil, always intending to recognize innovative leaders who have been transforming markets and generating positive impacts on the community.

Weighing 348 tons each, both transformers are manufactured at the factory in Blumenau, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil and will be incorporated into the electrical energy transmission system in the southern region of the African continent.
Benefits of these transformers include robustness, flexibility and reliability provided to the power supply system, contributing directly for the development of the local economy, in addition to being urgently needed to help minimize the current energy shortage in the region and expanding the ongoing emergency investments for the generation of complementary power supply. Regarded as the largest ever produced by WEG, these transformers feature power rating of 500,000kVA and voltage class of 400,000V.
The first unit is scheduled to ship early April of this year and the second in May, ahead of the agreed contractual terms. Transit time from the factory in Brazil to the final destination in Africa is estimated at 60 days.
In addition to holding manufacturing operations for other products in the African continent, WEG is also present locally with two transformer factories, both located near Johannesburg, South Africa, which produce and supply the local market with 145kV voltage class transformers.
“WEG strengthens its position in the local market with the on-time delivery of these 500 MVA transformers, which is necessary to minimize the shortage of power supply in the region. The entire supply which counted on the cooperation of our South African team, reinforces WEG’s commitment to the development of our employees and the interaction of competences, as well as to the development of the country” says Jan-Frederik Viljoen, Director of WEG Transformers Africa.

WEG has just announced that Nokia is taking part of the ‘Open Lab WEG / V2COM’ project to accelerate and develop Industry 4.0 solutions in the country with Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) platform.
As Pioneer, Open Lab WEG / V2COM is conducted in partnership with the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI) and Anatel, and will use Nokia DAC solution to validate the quality and economic model of the solutions to be developed under the project.
Nokia’s automation platform ensures a reliable, high-bandwidth, low-latency private network with local edge computing resources, voice and video services, as well as an application catalog. It is a compact and easy to implement the platform, consisting of network equipment, a cloud-based operation monitoring system and industrial connectors that facilitate standard and specific protocol connectivity for the industrial segment.
Expected to be concluded within a year, the project is being developed in a real production environment, in one of WEG’s factories, in Jaraguá do Sul, state of Santa Catarina. The results will contribute to Anatel’s studies on regulation of 5G private networks for business uses.
The factory will serve as a laboratory, in which a private 5G network will be tested simultaneously with a conventional network of an operating company. Several practical and advanced cases of Industry 4.0 will be developed to identify productivity gains that the solution may bring, allowing to consolidate consistent models to be applied in industrial automation projects.
Considering the technology progress after the pandemic period and favorable conditions of use of 5G network, two radio frequencies will be evaluated: one, below 6-gigahertz (GHz), and the other, higher, between 27.5 GHz and 27.9 GHz. An independent research institute will do all required performance analysis.
As stated by Guilherme Spina, Director of V2Com at WEG: “The 5G project at the WEG plant will bring the possibility not only of supporting official studies for the use of technology in Brazil, but will also accelerate the development and testing of WEG / V2COM products and solutions for our customers ”.
Marcelo Entreconti, Nokia Head of Enterprise for Latin America, says: “Our project with WEG is the latest example of the use of Nokia’s 5G private networks to leverage, as a leading supplier and technological partner, the level of Industry 4.0 in Brazil. With our technology, we bring increased productivity to several economy sectors. We are committed to Industry demands, from the training of people, such as our project with Open Lab Senai, as well as the development of case studies such as those being tested and applied by WEG “.
With more than 220 large corporate customers worldwide – where more than 30 adopt 5G – and an extensive ecosystem of key partners, Nokia has recently been named a leader in private wireless networks by GlobalData.
