There is no doubt that one of the major water problems facing the world today is the provision of drinking water. Water scarcity was listed in 2019 as one of the biggest global risks in terms of potential impact over the next decades.
Through a team of engineering specialists dedicated in the Water Industry, WEG has always been at the forefront of supplying electrical solutions for the Water Industry worldwide. This time WEG products are chosen as part of the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant (KMEDP) project in Singapore. In this specific project, WEG’s motors are installed in it.
The KMEDP is an innovative large-scale desalination facility; and is also the world’s first dual-mode desalination plant. Its innovative capability can treat both freshwater and seawater, depending on weather conditions. The plant will produce 137.000 m3/day of clean water, which is enough to fill 45 olympic-size swimming pools and 7 percent of Singapore’s daily water demand.
For this project, WEG Singapore collaborate with Torishima, a pioneer in pumps for seawater desalination, to supply the high efficiency motors for their Reverse Osmosis (RO) system package.
In desalination systems, from small to large capacities, energy savings is always concern, it’s usual therefore, to consider energy recovery devices (ERD) to achieve best operation conditions and high energy savings. This device combined with the ERD Booster pumps and high-pressure pumps will drive cost savings and emission reductions.
There are two types of pumps used in RO system High Pressure Pump and ERD Booster Pump.
The WEG’s motors scope of supply from Nantong Factory was:
Motors for the use in desalination plants are required to operate in harsh climates 24/7, highly durable, with special painting plant against corrosion from seawater and high efficiency to minimize energy consumption.
WEG is very proud to be part of the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant project, with the supply of special designed products to attend customers’ needs. This project is another WEG step towards Water Industry and Driving Efficiency and Sustainability.

WEG has partnered with Sacyr Industrial to provide essential equipment and support the expansion of a largescale seawater desalination plant in Tenerife. The project, completed through WEG subsidiary, WEG AUTRIAL, has increased the desalinated water production capacity of the site by 37 per cent, increasing its potential supply to 24,000 more households than before.
Desalination describes the removal of salt from seawater to produce clean drinking water. This process is crucial for countries that have coastlines but have no readily available fresh water source. Canary Islands, such as Tenerife, are an example of where these operations are necessary.
The plant came into operation in 2001 but has undertaken a remodelling plan to better support the population of Tenerife. The remodelling project, managed by Sacyr Industrial and operated by Valoriza Agua, has enabled a colossal 28,800 cubic metres of water to be desalinated each day. This is a 37 per cent increase in capacity compared to the previous 21,000 cubic metres per day.
To support the remodelling project, WEG was approached to supply industrial power equipment to ensure the plant’s operations. Services included the installation of medium and low voltage electrical equipment, the installation of new Motor Control Centres (MCCs), plus the supply and installation of low voltage drives. This included the addition of 20 CFW11 variable speed drives (VSDs).
“WEG has a wealth of experience in suppling industrial equipment for harsh environments”, explained Javier De La Morena Cancela at WEG Spain. “For applications like the desalination plant in Tenerife, it was crucial that all suppliers are well versed in the complexities and challenges of installing equipment that can operate in saline conditions.”
“For this application, it was essential for the equipment to be robust, reliable and able to withstand the environment. Crucially, it was also imperative that the equipment is as energy efficient as possible as one of the core goals of the project was to reduce the emissions of the entire plant.”
“In addition to increasing production, the remodelling carried out by Sacyr have made it possible to increase the energy efficiency of the installation”, explained Paula Soriano, manager of the Empresa Mixta de Aguas de Santa Cruz de Tenerife (EMMASA), entity that manages the desalination plant in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. “[The remodelling is] achieving a reduction of emissions into the atmosphere of the environment of two million kilograms of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to the emissions of more than 1,700 new vehicles per year.”
The project has dramatically increased the conversion in the desalination plant, reducing the sea water needed to obtain the same amount of drinking water by 7,300 cubic metres per day. This volume is equivalent to almost four Olympic-size swimming pools a day.

This is another important supply made by the WEG´s Russian Commercial Operation (WRU) for the customer PJSC Polyus Gold, in the Magadan Region, the largest gold producer in Russia.
The scope of supply included a pair of Slip Ring Motors of 9000 KW at 1000rpm, and another two motors of 7500 KW also at 1000rpm and fully designed to be interchangeable with the old existing motors providing a smooth drop-in replacement.
The motors will be applied, in pairs, at huge SAG and Ball mills that operate through dual pinion drive summing their power to each mill.
Historically, the customer was facing a troublesome operation due to a number of different reasons such as mechanical fits, overheating of antifriction bearings and electrical overload events.
With prompt attention to the customer, the WEG team evaluated different options in order to offer the most reliable product. A robust design of slip ring rotor motors was recommended including reliable features such as fixed or liftable brushes, internal or external slip ring chamber and different series of sleeve bearings or antifriction bearing in oil bath.
The final design was approved after customer inspection at WEG headquarters facilities in Brazil and a technical visit to a cooper mine in Chile where similar WEG motors are successfully operating.
A key factor for this project was the local WEG specialists in the market providing fast response to the customer and listening carefully to the customer needs.
The WEG Slip Ring Mining motors were designed in such a way to allow another technical key factor for this project where they can operate both as a slip ring motor or as an induction motor fed by inverter when the temperature is very cold (-50°C) and the ore inside the mills gets frozen and then the mills speed can be automatically controlled.
The electric motors were delivered in July 2020. Due to sanitary restrictions, the commissioning was postponed to December and work was carried out from November 15 to December 23, 2020.
PJSC Polyus is the largest gold producer in Russia and is among the top 10 gold producers globally with one of the lowest cost profiles.
The Company also holds the world’s third largest gold reserves with 61 million ounces of proven and probable gold reserves underpinning its strong growth profile.
Polyus´ main operations are located in Krasnoyarsk Territory, Irkutsk Region, Magadan Region (Natalka) and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and include 5 operating mines, alluvial operations and several advanced development projects.
The target for Natalka is 1200 tons of ore per hour, and the average in 2019 was 1400 tons per hour. In the fourth quarter, hourly productivity usually exceeded 1500 tons!
